Back in 2011, we started Web Heroes as a software development company. For years, we worked with all kinds of clients—small startups burning through their first funding, universities trying to modernize their systems, and Fortune 500 companies wrestling with legacy infrastructure.
Every project taught us the same pattern: there are fundamental components that every project needs—authentication, data management, user interfaces—that work better as independent, modular services. So in 2016, we built our first product—CoAuth (Cooperative Authentication). It started simple: just a way to store credentials safely. As our users' needs evolved, we turned it into a full SaaS platform. Then we hit a problem: people kept confusing CoAuth with OAuth. So we rebranded to MagicAuth.
Then cryptography started to become a prominent market feature. As MagicAuth evolved with these advances, we discovered something bigger—the secrets to fixing vendor lock-in. As the internet exploded with solutions, users faced choice paralysis. They'd invest time learning a tool, only to realize later they wanted to switch. But switching had become costly and painful. This discovery ignited a new passion: building tools that users could truly own and move freely between.
